Bian Que had rich experience in medical treatments. One famous legend tells of how once when Bian Que was in the feudal state of Cai. He saw the lord of the state at the time and told him:"Dear load，you have a disease only in your skin. It will get worse without treatment." The lord felt displeased and brushed this aside. Ten days later, Bian Que visited again. He said:" Dear load，your disease has spread to blood. It will get worse without treatment." The lord was still doubt about it. Another ten days had passed when he met the lord again, Bin Que said:"Your disease has spread to stomach. It will get worse if you ignore. " The Lord got pretty angry as he didn't like being said sickly. Another ten days later, when the last time Bian Que went to see the lord, he looked in from afar and rushed out of the palace. When an attendant asked him why he had done this, he replied:"When the sickness was in the skin, it can be cured by iron medicine. When in the blood, it can be treated by pinprick and stone needle. When in the stomach, it can be remedied by wine. But the disease was incurable in the marrow. Unfortunate, the lord's sickness has reached marrow. So it's incurable now. "Five days later, the lord was seriously ill. Then he sent attendants for Bian Que, but he was gone. The lord died soon after.
Bian Que had an open mind and was curious and assiduous in studying medical skills. He put his experience in medical treatment into practice for common people and practiced medicine around the states to free people from illness and suffering. Many of the basic theories of the traditional Chinese medicine, which is still playing a great role in the health service of mankind, are closely related to Bian Que.
